The Imam, the Pasha and the Englishman

Our next lecture will be given by Michael Crawford, a former member of the IASA Committee, on his recently published book entitled The Imam, the Pasha and the Englishman.  It will take place by Zoom at 17.30 BST, 19:30 KSA on 24 September 2024.
The book details the dramatic encounter between Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Egypt, and Imam Abd Allah ibn Saud in Cairo in November 1818, which marks the end of the First Saudi State. The Imam was in transit for execution in Istanbul, while the Pasha was on his way to becoming a major regional force and founder of a dynasty. The meeting was witnessed by an Englishman, John Bowes Wright, a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge whose previously unpublished account throws light on the exchange. The talk will be of particular value to those interested in the pre-modern history of the Middle East.
